Directed by Joseph Vilsmaier this German made film tells the harrowing account of a group of soldiers involved in the battle for Stalingrad. Stalingrad had its world premier at the Mathaser Filmplast cinema in Munich on January 19th, 1993. Even before the premier, it was awarded the Bavarian Film Prize for best overall film production with Vilsmaier receiving the prize for best conception and best camera, and sound chief Nikkel the award for best sound editing. The film was released with 200 copies in cinemas throughout Germany. Over half a million Germans went to see the film in its first two weeks of showing. Anyone who has seen this film will be impressed by its accuracy and eye for detail. A “Wreck Recovery” format article titled Typhoon Crash At Boulon, Normandy is a one page feature about the recovery of the remains of a Typhoon and pilot from a field in Normandy. The last article is an extensive account, The Death Of Rommel, looking at the events leading up to the death of Generalfeldmarschall Erwin Rommel. In all 54 pages of fascinating reading with many photographs on the "Then and Now" theme for which this publication is famous.
