Description: We purchased this piece at auction where we were told it was previously on loan with the Mississippi Museum of Art and comes from the Republic of Upper Volta. That country was created in the 1950s as a French-speaking colony. It obtained freedom in the sixties and, in 1984, it changed its name to Burkina Faso. The auctioneer described this item as a "reliquary door" and we can't prove otherwise. Though, we haven't seen any reliquaries from the region of the same composition. Perhaps it is a metal rendering of a wooden predecessor. Anyone who wishes to discuss the item are welcome to message. The piece is approximately seven inches by four.
