Description: THIS IS A FINE MASK OF YAURE PEOPLE , IVORY COAST. I'M NOT REALLY SURE HOW OLD THIS MASK IS AS I PURCHASED IT WITH OTHER AFRICAN ARTIFACTS IN MID 1970. THE YAURE ARE REGARDED AS A SUBGROUP OF THE BAULE PEOPLE IN IVORY COAST. THE YAURE MASKS CAN BE EASILY DISTINGUISHED FROM THOSE OF THE BAULE PEOPLE. THIS MASK IS CARVEDFROM HARD WOOD AND FEATURES A 'BEARD' THAT RUNS AROUND THE RIM OF THE FACE AND IS CARVED OUT FROM THE SAME PIECE OF WOOD. THIS IS TYPICAL OF THE YAURE. THE MASKFACE ITSELF SHOWS GREAT SIMILARITIES TO THE MASKS OF THEIR 'RELATIVES', THE BAULE PEOPLE: HIGH EYEBROW ARCHES, SLIT EYES, SCARIFICATION MARKS, A LONG THINNOSE AND A SMALL MOUTH. THIS HAS GOOD, OLD SHINY USAGE PATINA AS WELL AS A 'BITE BAR' ON THE BACK FOR THE MASKED DANCER. YOU CAN TELL THE BITE BAR HAS BEENREPLACED. THE RAFFIA ON THIS MASK IS QUITE UNUSUAL AS I HAVE ONLY SEEN A FEW WITHTHIS ADDITION.IT MEASURES 16.5 INCHES FROM THE LOWEST POINT OF THE CHIN TO THE TOP OF THE BIRD AND THEN WHEN YOU MEASURE THE RAFFIA, ADD ANOTHER 7 INCHES. ACROSS THE FACE FROM ONE SIDE TO THE OTHER. THE STAND COMES WITH THE MASK THIS MASK ORIGINALLY CAME FROM A FRENCH PRIVATE COLLECTION. THE $8.20 UNDER HANDLING COST IS FOR THE INSURANCE.
