Description: Two lots of handmade glass beads made in Ghana complement each other and would make a beautiful necklace or a couple of bracelets. The total length of the beads is 15 ½ inches. When you add spacer beads and a clasp, a necklace could be much longer. The villagers in Ghana grind glass bottles and containers to make the beads. They make temporary molds from clay to hold the glass powder, which they painstakingly add so that the colored glass forms a pattern. A cassava leaf is added to the mold to form the bead hole. The molds are baked. The beads are then cleaned, polished and strung to sell to the bead dealers. Not only is this an ingenious method of production, but it recycles glass containers instead of dumping them in landfill. I will be offering other African beads, including antique African Trade beads, originally made in Venice and Europe to barter with indigenous Africans for commodities, such as ivory, gold or palm oil.
