(Tobias) Smollett, M.D., with hundreds of engraved illustrations by Jean Gigoux (1806-1894), including a frontispiece in each book and marbled endpapers. The set was published by J. J. Dubochet & Co., of Old Broad Street, London; Charles Tilt, of Fleet Street, London; and H. Hooper, of Pall Mall East, London, in 1836 and is COMPLETE in two volumes. Alain-René Lesage (1668-1747) was a French novelist and playwright. He is best known for his comic novel The Devil upon Two Sticks (1707, Le Diable boiteux), his comedy Turcaret (1709), and this, his picaresque novel Gil Blas (1715–1735). Jean François Gigoux (1806-1894) was a French painter, lithographer and illustrator. In 1833, he became a contributor to Le Magasin pittoresque. Two years later, he created several hundred woodcuts for Gil Blas by Alain-René Lesage, and it was this work which brought him a great deal of notoriety. Gil Blas is born in misery to a stablehand and a chambermaid of Santillana in Cantabria, and is educated by his uncle. He leaves Oviedo at the age of seventeen to attend the University of Salamanca. His bright future is suddenly interrupted when he is forced to help robbers along the route and is faced with jail. He becomes a valet and, over the course of several years, is able to observe many different classes of society, both lay and clerical. Because of his occupation, he meets many disreputable people and is able to adjust to many situations, thanks to his adaptability and quick wit. He finally finds himself at the royal court as a favorite of the king and secretary to the prime minister. Working his way up through hard work and intelligence, Gil is able to retire to a castle to enjoy a fortune and a hard-earned honest life. The books measure 9.75 inches x 6.5 inches, will require 2.75 inches along your bookshelf and have 486 + 478 pages. The books are in good condition for their age, internally neat and clean, with heavy wear/scuffs to the leather spine and corners of the hardback covers (heaviest with some loss to the ends of the spines), with light foxing throughout. There are NO inscriptions/book-plates and NO other ink or pencil markings in either of the books. The bindings are good with no loose or missing pages. There are no dust-jackets. The leather title blazes are present but the Volume I blaze is missing. A wonderfully illustrated EARLY NINETEENTH CENTURY COMPLETE TWO VOLUME SET.
