Description: 800x600 Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE MicrosoftInternetExplorer4 Adolph Macho Lilypad Pitcher South Jersey Glass Vineland Offered here is a free-blown Lilypad Pitcher made by noted South Jersey glassblower Adolph Macho. Born in Czechoslovakia in 1892, Adolph Macho was trained as a glassblower in Moravia before emigrating to the United States in 1913. Macho eventually settled in southern New Jersey where he secured work making thermos-bottle glass fillers and chemical ware. He spent the years from 1916 to 1932 working in the Kimble and Durand glass factories in Vineland, making chemical ware, cylinders, and oil gauges, before going to work at the Hofbauer Glass Company. Macho retired from full-time glassmaking in 1953, purchasing a small farm in Vineland where he was content to tend to his chickens and blow glass part time for Gus Hofbauer. About 1955, he constructed a small furnace of his own in part of a chicken coop, where he produced most of his paperweights and blown glass over the next fifteen years. Macho died in 1975. This pitcher dates circa 1955-1971. It was made in a blue-green color glass that had been contaminated with amethyst from an earlier batch. The pitcher stands 7½ inches tall, has a plain applied foot and a pontil mark on the base. It is in very good to excellent condition and has just a touch of haze to the glass. (Most of Macho’s glass was made from cullet from soda and beer bottles.) Only a small number of Macho’s lilypad pitchers have survived and rarely surface for sale. This one has been in my collection for twenty-five years. I’ve never seen another lilypad pitcher in this color, although I have owned a couple of plain Macho pitchers without the lilypad or applied foot. It is also interesting in that the applied lilypad decoration is pulled to the left instead of the usual right. A rare example of this South Jersey artisan’s work.
