Description: DESCRIPTION AD 591 - 628 Khusru II & the True Cross Sasanian Empire Drachm Silver Coin 3AKU Up for sale is a large silver coin issued during the reign of King Khusru (Khusroe) the Second (r A.D. 590 to 628) of the Sasanian Empire. This was the last Iranian empire before the early Muslim conquests of the 7th–8th centuries AD. This coin was struck on hammer and anvil dies. A worker strikes the piece of metal between two coin dies, one placed on the hammer, and the other on the anvil. This coin measures 31.14 mm at its widest point and weighs 4.08 grams. The obverse displays a portrait of the king in right profile. He wears a three-toothed crown with a crescent in front. The reverse displays a blazing altar with two human attendants facing the viewer. Each attendant holds a spear. In A.D. 614, Khusru the Second invaded the city of Jerusalem and seized what many believe to be the cross used in Christs crucifixion. The Byzantine Emperor Heraclius defeated Khusru the Second and returned the True Cross to Jerusalem. Please view photos and feel free to ask questions.
