Original purple cloth [somewhat faded front and edges], front board cloth has a lovely gilt-stamped tall ship illustration with gilt and black titles, back board with blind-stamped design in the cloth. Size 7½" x 5" x ½"; viii, 142 pages, plus 2 pg. book ads from the publisher. Four full page plate illustrations, two striking ones with ships including HMS Warrior, numerous in-text illos, many nautical. The first letter in the word leading into each chapter has a pictorial representation by engraved scene which then stands as the symbol for that letter. There are eleven chapters delved into by Mr. Clarke, laid out as for a sea journey, filled with buckets of analogy, all brimming with Bible-based subjects found in this well of advice for [I assume] the young men who are the targets of this sermonization. These subjects include ship travels and adventures, instruments, specific sailing knowledge, currents, and trade winds. Fine binding is sturdy and sound, end papers intact. Besides the fading and occasional spotting seen in the scans, there is minor handling, general age, average wear and use, a darkened strip at 124/125 from a century-old bookmark, and a few smudges in the lower margins on a couple of early pages, possibly soot from a whale-oil lamp. ------------------------------------- Photographic image scans are of the actual items for sale.
