A Sketch of the Author's life, his edifying diary, and a very particular account of his conversion, have accordingly been added. As the works of the late President Edwards may not have been so generally diffused as many other works of less instructive tenor, the present publisher of his Treatise on Religious Affections deems it necessary to insert the recommendation of the following reverend gentlemen: Recommendation. Mr. James Crissy, printer, being about to republish, in a single volume the "Treatise concerning Religious Affections," by the late President Edwards, and wishing an expression of the sentiments of some of the Ministers, relative to the utility of the work, the difficulty lies in attempting to recommend a book, the praise of which is in the churches. The language is heavy, but every part of it indispensable. It is consistently put into the hands of those who wish to know themselves, and weather they be really Christians. To such we recommend it. James P. Wilson, J. J. Janeway, William Neill, T. H. Skinner, Ezra Stiles Ely, and J. Brodhead. ABOUT JONATHAN EDWARDS: Jonathan Edwards, (1703 to 1758), was an American revivalist preacher, philosopher, and Congregationalist theologian. Edwards is widely regarded as one of America's most important and original philosophical theologians. Edwards' theological work is broad in scope, but rooted in the pedobaptist (baptism of infants) Puritan heritage as exemplified in the Westminster and Savoy Confessions of Faith. Recent studies have emphasized how thoroughly Edwards grounded his life's work on conceptions of beauty, harmony, and ethical fittingness, and how central The Enlightenment was to his mindset. Edwards played a critical role in shaping the First Great Awakening, and oversaw some of the first revivals in 1733-35 at his church in Northampton, Massachusetts. His theological work gave rise to a distinct school of theology known as New England theology. Edwards delivered the sermon "Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God", a classic of early American literature, during another revival in 1741, following George Whitefield's tour of the Thirteen Colonies. Edwards is well known for his many books, The End for Which God Created the World, The Life of David Brainerd, which inspired thousands of missionaries throughout the 19th century, and Religious Affections, which many Calvinist Evangelicals still read today. Edwards died from a smallpox inoculation shortly after beginning the presidency at the College of New Jersey in Princeton. He was the grandfather of Aaron Burr, the third United States vice president. (Wikipedia) CONDITION: Shows overall considerable wear on the cover, yet boards have been professionally repaired and reinforced at the hinges. Some repair to the spine. A piece of the label is missing at the left corner. Even as there is some foxing throughout, leaves have beautifully and evenly toned at 200 years old. Pagination appears complete. Copy is free from marginalia and annotation, except for several previous owner's names written in ink, (presumed from the period), within the front pastedown, front endpapers, and title page. A remarkable copy of this, Edwards's possibly most famous book. A phenomenal gift for any pastor, theologian, or collector of eighteen and nineteenth century Christian theological works.
