In addition to contributing articles to the Durham Archaeological Journal and other academic publications, he has also written numerous articles for magazines (most notably The Northumbrian) and is also the author of several books, including Battles in Britain 1066-1746 and The Zulus and Matabele - Warrior Nations. His leisure activities include playing the piano, cello and guitar. He also enjoys reading novels (favourite authors include A.J. Cronin and Louis LAmour) and playing tennis and spending time in the countryside.
