Although he served with distinction and ranked seventh in seniority among American general officers at the end of the Revolutionary War, this book is the first scholarly account of his life.---------------Born into the North Carolina planter aristocracy, Howe was in the forefront of political leadership of the colony during the 1760s. With the outbreak of war in 1775, he was appointed colonel of the Second North Carolina regiment. Howe became commanding general of the Southern Department and the highest-ranking officer from the states south of Virginia. Here he faced the repeated frustrations of dealing with uncooperative state political officials who were determined to exert supreme authority in their own states, usually at the expense of the Continental Army.-----------------After Howe's forces were defeated by the British in Savannah in December 17'78, Benjamin Lincoln assumed command of the Southern Department and Howe rode north to join General Washington's army. As division commander in the New York Highlands he participated in the defense of West Point and helped prey upon British positions around New York City. On two occasions he was called upon to put down mutinies in the Continental Army. He presided over the courts-martial of Generals Benedict Arnold and Alexander McDougall, and he sat on the jury for the spy trial of British Major John Andre.---------------After serving during the entire war, Howe returned to his native state and began to rebuild his image as a planter and political leader. He was elected to the General Assembly, but he died in 1786 before taking office. This biography places Howe in perspective among his contemporaries; he is portrayed as a man aware of his weaknesses but driven by a quest for glory.
