Description: A LITTLE PILGRIM In the Unseen Goes Up Higher&THE LITTLE PILGRIM FURTHER EXPERIENCESIn the Seen and Unseen On the Dark Mountains The Land of Darknessby Mrs. Oliphant (Margaret Oliphant Wilson)_________________ Hardcover no dust jacket; 123 & 190 pages; Size Approx. 4 3/4 x 6 3/4.Published by Roberts Brothers; 1895.Details: This book combines two books in one. Each is numbered separately." 'A Little Pilgrim: Stories of the Seen and the Unseen' by Mrs. Oliphant is a book that has given hope and security to Christian boys and girls of all ages. The book follows a young Pilgrim on a journey through Heaven. The book was considered, by many, a sort of reminder of what is waiting at the end of a good, Godly life. Its eloquent and dreamy quality make it a classic to this day." The first book includes: A Little Pilgrim: In the Unseen earlier published in MACMILLAN'S MAGAZINE, May 1882; and The Little Pilgrim Goes Up Higher earlier published in MACMILLAN'S MAGAZINE, September 1882. "During her lifetime Oliphant's most popular supernatural fiction was a series of stories about a dead women whom she called the Little Pilgrim. A goodhearted soul, the Little Pilgrim went to Heaven but soon found it necessary to spread her goodwill back on Earth and in Hell. These stories were immensely popular in America," The second book includes: " The Little Pilgrim in the Seen and Unseen and On the Dark Mountains, two religious fantasies of the 'Little Pilgrim' and her after-death experiences, and her much more interesting The Land of Darkness, which presents a mean-spirited metropolitan Hell, surprisingly modern in its depersonalized brutality. This last set in a nether world reminiscent of Dante's Hell. The various places of the land of darkness are allegories of the main totalitarian aspects of a society, like that of the Victorian age, based on individualistic ethics. The huge vacant plain without tracks and the dust heaps and ruins, which constitutes the setting for them all, represents the fate of the past in a culture dominated by the gospel of the future. Not only one of the best ghost stories in English, The Land of Darkness, as a powerful critique of bourgeois culture and society developing the germs of our postmodern present, may be considered as a proto-dystopia which anticipates the worlds of Orwell, Zamyatin, Huxley and other SF writers."Margaret Oliphant Wilson Oliphant (née Margaret Oliphant Wilson) was a Scottish novelist and historical writer, who usually wrote as Mrs. Oliphant. Her fictional works encompass "domestic realism, the historical novel and tales of the supernatural."A fine addition for your bookshelf!Condition: Very light wear, otherwise in very good-plus condition with a solid binding and clean pages, no names or markings. For nearly all of our books, we use a specially designed boxing system from IPS (Inovative Packaging Solutions) located in York, PA. These media shipping boxes are designed to conform to the size of the book, securing it and preventing it from bumping around during shipping. The end result is a box which provides a double thickness of cardboard covering the front and back of the book; actually almost like a box within a box. The outer layer of cardboard extends beyond the ends of the inner "box" which very efficiently protects the corners of the book from being bumped and damaged by the sometimes rough handling packages receive in transit. In addition we place the book in a plastic bag to help guard against moisture if a package is left out in the elements.Delivery: We aim to get all books shipped within 24 hours of order except on weekends. We can't control the delivery time once a book leaves our hands, but most of the time USPS is prompt in delivery, and the expected delivery time given by eBay is usually fairly accurate. Because we use media mail to keep costs down, it does take a little longer for delivery, and occasionally packages get delayed in the mail system. If for some reason your order has not arrived within the expected time frame, please get in contact with us so that we can try to help you.
