Description: First Edition of Mark Twain's fictional account of Buffalo Bill's horse in scarce original jacket! The character of the girl was supposedly based on Twain's daughter Susy Clemens who passed in 1896 at the age of 24. A Horse's Tale by Mark Twain (aka Samuel Clemens, author the Adventures of Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn, the Prince and the Pauper, and A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court) Illustrated Hardcover First Edition - First Printing - Original Dust Jacket New York: Harper & Brothers, 1907. Contains five plate illustrations including the frontispiece. $1.00 cover price on the spine of the jacket. (The story first appeared in Harper's Magazine in 1906. This is the first appearance in book form.) Issue Points: Red cloth boards with etching of a girl on a horse, copyright 1907 on the copyright page with no further indication of later printings or any other markings on the copyright page which indicates a first printing. 153 pages, 152 numbered with end-papers at the front and back and a few blank pages at the end. (Conforms to other listings of first editions I've seen online.) Dust Jacket: Clothed in a dull yellow dust jacket with $1.00 cover price present on the spine, both flaps of the jacket present. On the front of the jacket is a blurb about the book. The front flap "How to Open a Book" and the back flap has an advertisement for "Eve's Diary", another Twain book published in 1906. The back of the jacket has an advertisement which lists Mark Twain titles as part of the "Works of Mark Twain Uniform Edition". NOTE: The present book is NOT part of that set. Condition: Fine in Near Fine Original Dust Jacket! Possibly the only copy currently available this book in original jacket. Original dust jackets from prior to 1910 are scarce, especially nearly intact. Most buyers threw away the jackets prior to WWII. There is some evidence of restoration to the jacket. Some toning and crinkling but in more or less outstanding condition. The book itself is just about fine, NO hinge splitting at all, clean boards, straight corners, clean pages with some natural age-toning. Priced to sell as a Twain collectible. NOTE regarding Dust Jackets: It is unclear if some Mark Twain's late novels were issued in dust jackets in their respective first editions. Probably by circa 1890, they were, but very few survive. The jacket for "A Horse's Tale" may be one of only about a couple dozen which are extant, and possibly the only one completely intact. NOTE: All modern books with dust jackets come with dust jacket covers.ALSO: The pictured are of the actual item for sale. (The pictures are NOT stock photos.) IMPORTANT NOTE: All sales are generally FINAL. I do NOT accept returns because of buyer's remorse, "it was a gift but the recipient already had it", or "I found the same book at a better price". I do not base my pricing on other retailers' offerings as each book is priced considering both edition and condition. Returns are only accepted in the remote possibility discrepancies regarding edition and/or condition were not fulling described, of which I try to be very thorough in researching the edition/printing as well as describing ALL condition issues. So make sure you're 100% positive you desire one of my items before making a purchase. NOTE on USPS Shipping: FREE shipping in the continental US, $87 priority flat-rate medium box, $87 rest of the world. I tend to ship on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays sometimes on Friday. I do not ship on Mondays and Saturdays.
