The name "Cy" was named after the great American major leaguer Cy Young (1867 -1955), who shares the nickname of his father. Cy studied at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston from 1947 to 49 and at The Art Students League of New York on a scholarship from 1950 to 51, where he met Robert Rauschenberg (1925 -2008). Rauschenberg encouraged him to join Black Mountain College from 1951 to 52, where he studied under Franz Klein (1910 -1962), Robert Motherwell (1915 -1991) and Ben Schaan (1898 -1969). He also met John Cage (1912 -1992) here.In the mid-1950s, he was a prominent figure among a group of artists working in New York with Robert Rauschenberg and Jasper Jones. A large-scale retrospective exhibition was held in 1968. He settled in Rome in 1967 and was based there until his death in 2011.
