Description: The 63rd Illinois Volunteer Infantry was organized ar Camp Dubois, Anna , Illinois with volunteers from Southern Illinois, and served 3 years incl the Battles of Vicksburg, Richmond, Louisiana, Missionary Ridge, Tennessee, then marched with Sherman, taking the City of Columbia, South Carolina and their last battle was at Bentonville NC, and proudly marched in the Grand Review. An original Civil War Ordnance receipt for the issue of 16 Belgium Rifled Muskets and accessories to Company F of the 63rd at Cairo, Illinois, August 4, 1862. The receipt is signed by Captain Joseph R Lemmon as Company Commander. Muskets were purchased in Europe and issued early in the War to many Midwestern regiments, they weighed almost 11 pounds, firing a huge 69 Caliber ball and veterans, complaining the Liege guns were unsafe, were happy to be issued modern Springfield Rifles as they became available.
