Toile (pronounced "twall") originated in France. This classic decorating pattern is more than 200 years old. In 1779, the introduction of copper plates made the characteristic precise and detailed drawings possible. Toile dishes typically consist of only two colors and usually portray pastoral scenes, from daily life, or historical landmarks, such as castles. Transferware is the term assigned to ceramics that are decorated with motifs that are applied by engravings transferred from a copper engraving, to a special tissue, and then onto a pottery base.
