Description: Condition as seen. Lancaster WharfCharles Co Ind.May 6th, 1864 Dear Cousin, I take this present opportunity of writing you a few lines to let you know that I am well at present, and hope that these few lines may find you enjoying the same good blessings.I should have answered your letter sooner but I am so lazy that I can only get one letter a week and that is to Essie. I expect to be married next month if I can get home but I do not know whether I can get home or not, but I am going to try hard anyway and I hope that I may succeed in getting home for I think it is time for me to get married, that is if I want to save any money. I wish I had been married long ago for I know that I would have been several hundred dollars better off. Essie has been scolding me every letter nearly for spending my money so fast. I suppose you read about the rebels killing our men so at Fort Pillow and at Plymouth. I think that is awful if any able bodied man can stay at home and stand all that. Why I say he is no man at all. If the war is not over when I get home I am going in to it again for I am one of the ones that cannot stay at home and read about that and not go and help all that I am able. I may be the next one to be struck by a ball but I do not fear them. I will never run. I could not disgrace myself or my friends at home. My Captain run but I have never done it yet and never will.I believe this is all at present. Give my regards to Aunt Jane & Maggie Thompson. Yours as ever,EJ RogersLt.
