These look great next to a pond as they grow fast when the roots are kept damp . They bloom in the fall usually around Sept with large plumes of yellow flowers and reproduce by under ground runners and by next spring you'll have too many . Goldenrods are members of the genus Solidago which includes about 100 species of North American wildflowers . All species are perennials ranging to 5 feet tall. The yellow flowers signal to hay fever sufferers that their misery is about to begin , but Goldenrods do not cause hayfever! Ragweed, Ambrosia spp., does; it has inconspicuous green flowers and blooms at the same time as the insect-pollinated, showy-flowered goldenrods do . Medicinal use : Haemostatic, styptic. The root is applied as a poultice to burns. An infusion of the dried powdered herb can be used as an antiseptic. The blossoms are analgesic, astringent and febrifuge. They have been chewed and the juice slowly swallowed to treat sore throats. A tea made from the flowers is used in the treatment of diarrhea, body pains, fevers and snakebites. The plant contains quercitin, a compound that is reportedly useful in the treatment of hemorrhagic nephritis Edible parts of Canadian Goldenrod: Young leaves and flowering stems - cooked. Seed. Used as a thickener in soups. The seed is very small and is only used as a survival food when all else fails.
