Description: 50 Descants for Hymns of the Church Vol. 1 by L. David Miller, Muhlenberg Press, 1962. The descant is a counter-melody designed to enhance an original melody. This book is designed for the soprano range and would be suitable for children's voices, piano or organ, or any C instrument. Many of the descants are "ah--------" and some are written with lyrics. The harmonies and stanzas are taken from the new Service Book and Hymnal of the Lutheran Church in America (1958). The author has some strong opinions on the singing of descants: that they should be used with restraint, and they should be used as an aid to worship and "not as a pious stunt." There is one underlined sentence: If the hymn has three stanzas, use the descant on the last. The descant is used on the last stanza. 51 pages.
