Description: This is a rare ticket for the TONY SUPPER BALL and TAITTINGER CHAMPAGNE RECEPTION which followed the Forty-Seventh Annual ANTOINETTE PERRY AWARDS ceremony held at the Gershwin Theatre in New York City on June 6th, 1993. The Tony Supper Ball was held at the Broadway Ballroom at the New York Marriott Marquis. The American Theatre Wing's Tony Awards® got their start in 1947 when the Wing established an awards program to celebrate excellence in the theatre. Named for Antoinette Perry, an actress, director, producer, and the dynamic wartime leader of the American Theatre Wing who had passed away the previous year, the Tony Awards made their official debut at a dinner in the Grand Ballroom of the Waldorf Astoria Hotel on Easter Sunday, April 6th, 1947. Vera Allen, Perry's successor as chairwoman of the Wing, presided over an evening that included dining, dancing, and a program of entertainment. Among those honored at the 1992-93 Tony's with acting awards were BRENT CARVER (Kiss of the Spider Woman), CHITA RIVERA (Kiss of the Spider Woman), ANTHONY CRIVELLO (Kiss of the Spider Woman), ANDREA MARTIN (My Favorite Year), RON LEIBMAN (Angels in America: Millennium Approaches), MADELINE KAHN (The Sisters Rosensweig), STEPHEN SPINELLA (Angels in America: Millennium Approaches) and DEBRA MONK (Redwood Curtain). The award for "Best Musical" went to "KISS OF THE SPIDER WOMAN", "Best Book of a Musical" to TERRENCE McNALLY (Kiss of the Spider Woman) and "Best Original Score" shared by JOHN KANDER and FRED EBB (Kiss of the Spider Woman) and PETE TOWNSHEND (The Who's Tommy). "Best Revival" went to "ANNA CHRISTIE", "Best Play" went to TONY KUSHNER (Angels in America: Millennium Approaches), "Best Choreography" to WAYNE CILENTO (The Who's Tommy), "Best Direction of a Musical" to DES McANUFF (The Who's Tommy) and "Best Direction of a Play" to GEORGE C. WOLFE (Angels in America: Millennium Approaches). The host of the Forty-Seventh Annual Tony Awards was Liza Minnelli and presenting awards were Bea Arthur, Tom Bosley, Matthew Broderick, Ellen Burstyn, Diahann Carroll, Michael Crawford, Tyne Daly, Tammy Grimes, Marvin Hamlisch, Julie Harris, Gregory Hines, James Earl Jones, Agnes de Mille, Amanda Plummer, Jonathan Pryce, Mercedes Ruehl, Ron Silver, Lily Tomlin, Tommy Tune and Ben Vereen. There were musical performances from Barry Bostwick, Liza Minnelli, Bill Irwin, David Shiner, and cast members from Cats; Crazy For You; Falsettos, Guys and Dolls; Jelly's Last Jam and The Will Rogers Follies. A Special Tony Award was presented to the Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II musical Oklahoma!
