Description: 4/4 Guarneri Model Violin John Friedrich & Bro., firm Imported from Germany, Grade 32, Anno 1914. No. 3147 100+ year old German Imported Guarneri Violin and case in Very Good Condition!Our Notes: This violin came to us from an old customer who discovered this gem in her deceased husband's collection. We had the violin professionally appraised by J.R. Judd Violins of Pennsylania (see description below).Description from Appraiser: John Friedrich was a German born violin maker (1858 -1943) who worked in the United States. He immigrated to the US in 1883. The firm closed in 1935. The instrument was made in 1914 and carries with it the number #3147, grade 32. The violin has some signs of wear on its edges, corners, and plates. This is normal playing wear, consistent and healthy on an instrument of this age. No issue. The scroll is beautiful and is in excellent condition. The varnish on the spruce top is widely marked with some inconsistent darker spots, although it is very beautiful. The varnish on the back plate is more consistent and has more transparent clarity with actual patina and playing wear. The varnish is of a medium amber orange-brown on a golden ground. The spruce top plate is of two-pieces with a medium grain at the center seam which broadens towards the flanks. The two-piece back is of highly flamed European maple with a consistent medium width that slightly descends from the center seam. The same quality and degree of flame is found on the ribs, neck, and the scroll. The violin is well made, and the fittings are in ebony. The instrument has choice wood selection, much handwork, hand drawn varnish with very clean workmanship inside the violin and out. The label also reads along the perimeter of the label; “Highest Award, World’s Columbian Expedition, Chicago 1893//Grand Prize and Gold Medal, St. Louis World’s Exposition 1904”.
