Description: Gelsemium Sempervirens is a twining climbing vine in the family Gelsemiaceae, native to subtropical and tropical America: Honduras, Guatemala, Belize, Mexico and southeastern and south-central United States from Texas to Virginia. It has a number of common names including Yellow Jasmine, Carolina Jessamine, Yellow Hummingbird Vines, Evening Trumpet flower, Gelsemium and Woodbine. Gelsemium can grow to 10–20 ft high when given suitable climbing support. The leaves are evergreen and lustrous, dark green. It produces clusters of trumpet-shaped yellow flowers 1 to 1 1/2" long. Its flowers are strongly scented and produce nectar that attracts a range of pollinators including hummingbirds and butterflies. Interesting Information: Yellow Jessamine is the state flower of South Carolina. Historically Gelsemium sempervirens was used as a topical to treat papulous eruptions.
