Between 1500 and 1650, the Spanish Crown imported 181 tons of gold and 16,000 tons of silver from the New World. The Chivor emerald mine was discovered northeast of Bogotá in 1537. The Muzo emerald mine was found in the Western Boyacá Province of Colombia in 1545, and the Potosi Silver Mine was discovered in Bolivia in 1555. The Muzo mines are situated in the western foothills of the Eastern ranges of the Andes Mountains. The Muzo region was inhabited by the people of the same name before the Spanish conquest. They extracted emeralds and were known as “The Emerald People.” The Muzo emerald deposits, along with the Chivor (Somondoco) and Coscuez deposits, had been work by the Indians long before Christopher Columbus arrived in the New World. A genuine and authentic piece of sunken treasure. A fantastic addition to any shipwreck collection. Good Luck!!
