These devices are used in manufacturing production lines, vending machines, robotics, copiers, printers, etc. This optical interrupter differs from most others in one significant aspect: It has Dual Detectors. Together they can be used to sense direction and / or make an up-down counter. So how does it work? If you look at the test schematic you will see two outputs. In operation one or the other LED will always be on, but not both. This Optical Interrupter Demo (15 seconds) shows how the sensor works. https://linearparts.com/images/OI2_Demo.mpg Here's a brief explanation of the setup. 1) Cut a strip of cardboard with 1/16" wide slots spaced 1/2" apart. (see pictures above) 2) Wire the assembly as shown in the picture above. 3) Sliding the strip from Right to Left, the Blue LED comes on continuously except as the slot passes the sensor. At that moment, the Red LED toggles on briefly and the Blue LED blinks off simultaneously. 4) Sliding the strip from Left to Right, the Red LED comes on continuously except as the slot passes the sensor. At that moment, the Blue LED toggles on briefly and the Red LED blinks off simultaneously. It's really simple though not so easy to describe. We used a strip, but a slotted disc (or clear plastic disc with painted stripes) attached to a shaft or knob could just as easily be used. LOW = 0.3 Volts, VHIGH = 3.3 Volts --> Sensor Gap Width: 1/16" Connector: FFC 5-Position 1mm-Pitch The sensor housing is mounted to a circuit board with a 0.1µF bypass cap, 150 ohm resistor (for the IR LED source) and connector.
