It contains all non-error printing varieties of Scott number 2943 Alice Paul Suffragist. The colors are bright, the perfs are complete and the stamps are fresh and problem free. The stamps are from the brief THIRD GREAT AMERICANS series, which ran from 1995 to 1999. Alice Paul was issued Aug. 18, 1995 to cover the USPS 3 oz. domestic letter rate calculated as 32c + 23c + 23c = 78c. All stamps were printed by Banknote Corp. of America on the T/A-2 printing press in a series of press runs. Both USA and British supplied paper were used for the different plates. Several of the varieties and plate numbers are scarce. Solid tagging is prephosphored coated paper. Not everybody that tries to sell this issue can actually tell them apart. These cannot be correctly identified by the colors alone. We often see minor color variations of 2943 or 2943a incorrectly offered as 2943b. We use long wave reactivity, information obtained from the printer, plate layout, gum, and other factors to guarantee accuracy. Paul was withdrawn from philatelic sale beginning March 1998. The USPS letter rate changed Jan. 1999 making the rate obsolete.
