The term art nouveau first appeared in the 1880s in the Belgian journal L’Art Moderne to describe the work of Les Vingt, twenty painters and sculptors seeking reform through art. Nature, in particular, was an important source of inspiration for Art Nouveau, illustrated by the generous use of plant and floral motifs and numerous bird images. In 1893, Belgian architect Victor Horta (1861-1947) put the finishing touches to Tassel House, the founding work of the Art Nouveau movement in Brussels. The design style of Victor Horta proved very popular with the upper-middle class and he was soon commissioned to build mansions and department stores, before his many emulators entered the scene to make Art Nouveau into a movement in Belgium. In Europe and North America, the Art Nouveau movement lasted roughly from the late 1880s until the First World War. The reverse is the standard 2 euro design featuring a map of Europe and the denomination.
