Premiering in 1892 in Saint Petersburg, Russia, the ballet’s musical score is still instantly identifiable today thanks to Tchaikovsky’s use of the chime-like instrument, the celesta. In the story, the young heroine Clara receives a wooden Nutcracker from her toymaker grandfather on Christmas eve. Once the clock strikes midnight, the Nutcracker comes to life; and Clara embarks on an adventure with the Nutcracker and the other Christmas toys.The obverse features the effigy of Queen Elizabeth II, surrounded by various inscriptions. A snowflake symbol appears near the top, directly above the year of mintage.
