They are from the Scotling team of metal miniatures and are really full of loads of character. Scotlings, in my eyes, is a cover all phrase that refers to Scottish short people with beards, who dress in Highland kilts and drink lots, but also covers any little people such as Brownie, Dwarves, Brounie (Urisk), Gnomes, Halflings and Imps. So pretty catch all, depending on your view of them. They are designed as players for the Elfball game, so you can use eleven of them, with an Impcrusher (which is basically a Gnome sized death Roller), as a Thunder Hammer Dwarfs team, or use them as nine Gnome players with the addition of three Caber teams. Quite a few in the range would go well as fans on the sidelines, or possibly sideline staff. They cover a wide range and the overall team itself has varying sizes of player, so quite a difference of scale, which is good if you want to use them for Bloodbowl, with some as Linemen and the large ones as heftier Blitzers. A standard Games Workshop Bloodbowl Dwarf team can choose from 0 to 16 Blockers, 0-2 Runners, 0-2 Blitzers, 0-2 Troll slayers and 0-1 Deathroller. Various from the set can fit in each category of Bloodbowl player and it's nice to have the positionals all different, rather than many multiples of duplicates or incredibly similar miniatures. These little Scots can also be used as a Highland themed Halfling team, with the Scotling Cabers being used in place of the Halfling Treemen Big Guys. There are various Scotling expansion packs available and they total up to 14 variants that are in the complete set. That's the Scotling Caber team of three men, with the named Scotlings, and have they got some great little names. There's Ave It (who looks like he's in a goalie like position (so a great Blocker), Flying kick (with his hand on the ground going in for a hobnail hello), Crossed, Kneel, Flash (who's lifting his kilt and showing off some womens frilly knickers that he's wearing), Scratch (who's scratching his backside), Catch (who looks like he's waving his hat), Runner, Ball, Haggis (who's flinging a Haggis), Scotling Double (one giving the other a leg up / Piggy back to either knock the ball or punch the other teams much taller players), Drink (who looks like a drunk Dwarf and is dragging the equivalent of a 6 pack behind him) and Rage. I would like to see a little Scotling Cheerleader for the sidelines, but you cannot have everything. Armed with Scottish kilt technology, it's a team ready for any of the more unusual highland games.A plastic base is included, 1 x 30mm. This is a D&G base, which personally I don't like. Basically I use Games Workshop plastic Bases as they are deeper. It's not a problem with the miniatures in the Scotling team, as they don't have slottas, but usually if miniatures do, then you have to shave off a bit from the bottom of the slotta so they don't 'rock' on the table. This is because the slotta on the mini, is deeper than the actual D&G base. So the slotta passes right through to the other side. Like I say, not a problem for these little chaps, but I'd still advise drilling and pinning them onto whichever bases you do end up using. If you do that, and fill the bases, then they'll be pretty much unmovable. Anyway, that's the waffle over, but if you instead want to go Games Workshop for your Bloodbowl team, and why not as GW created the game and brought out a wealth of great stuff, then read on,.......GW originally brought out 13 miniatures in the 1st edition set and only did a few of each race. Citadel originally brought a few out under the LE18 reference. The advert for these can be seen in the Citadel January 1987 flyer. GW released a Human, a Dark Elf, an Orc and a Dwarf. The LE reference was for GW's Limited Edition range that was usually only available for a month and then withdrawn. Although various miniatures were called back into dutiful service later on. These four players did reappear as they were brought back out later on. Three of them can be seen in Games Workshop's White Dwarf 89 May 1987 under the BB3 reference, but GW dropped the Dark Elf name, referring just to Elf from then on, as the figure could easily double for either. Also the first edition metal miniatures were then referred to as either Attackers or Defenders. These early figures came out under the references BB1, BB2 and BB3. Most of these early 1st edition Bloodbowl minis can be seen in the GW 1988 catalogue where some were referred to as Linesman or Blitzers, as those were the only positions in the early version of the game. GW did two early 1st edition Lead miniature Dwarves but only one was shown in that later catalogue. It is highly likely that he was not available at this later date, so perhaps one of them is harder to get due to it. These Dwarves could easily fit in with the 2nd Edition Chaos Dwarfs that GW brought out later.
