Page Size: Approx. 8" x 11" (21 cm x 28 cm) each pageCondition: Good In the early 1980s, I had the temerityto entertain several dozen crackpothypotheses on the fundamentals ofmotorcycling—this was before I evenowned a bike. One such theory statedthe very7 first bike you own oughtto be dirt cheap and ugly as sin. Con-sequently, my first ride was a CB45OSCHonda Nighthawk—“popularly priced”fodder for a carefree, college-boundsimpleton like yours truly. Obviouslybone-shaking performance and dash-ing good looks were luxuries buriedfar down on my shopping checklist atthe time.I was recently reminded of myirrelevant rants while on a photoshoot in Modesto, California, where Imet Antonio Renzi. His first bike isthe 1400cc Yamaha Royal Star picturedhere. A heavyweight cruiser with cus-tom bodywork and seriously mas-saged mechanicals has a funny wayof smashing small-minded motorcy-cle theories. In fact, gazing at Renzi’simmaculate 1997 Royal Star, with itssupercharger sprouting from thecylinders, made my first-bike theoryseem painfully ignorant. This guy’s firstride is neither a basic nor a beginnerbike. It’s a monster.Renzi admits he was drawn to Harley-Davidsons initially, but the expense andreputation for unreliability redirectedhis quest toward metrics. An admirerof functionality, Renzi found himselfparticularly intrigued by the YamahaRoyal Star’s innovative four-cylinderconfiguration. Renzi acquired Ills firstregistration slip three years ago with thepurchase of this Star, even though he’dbeen riding for 15 years prior. “Beforethis,” he says, “I just rode whatever wasavailable.. .cousins’ bikes, friends’bikes.. .whatever!”Closer to FineRenzi’s penchant for eye-pleasingaesthetics is evident on the bodyworkof the bike, most notably with itsstretched gas tank, which creates aleaner look for the Royal Star Healso redesigned the fenders, withextensions fabricated to lengthenthe rear and follow the inner arcof the wheel. The stockfront fender was choppedthree inches, exposing ashimmering billet Pro-One front wheel. Stockwidth was retained onboth fenders, but thebike’s front end waslowered 1.5 incheswith the help ofa Baron CustomAccessories kit.Renzi droppedthe back downeven further witha new mountingbracket for the stock shocks, lowering the whole shebang2.5 inches.A Planet Cruiser triple tree assemblywas added and decorated with a billetclamp from Pro-One, which showcasesunexpectedly recessed turn signals. The forks were chromed at West CoastChrome and die combination bathesthe entire front end in reflective metal. This unique Royal Star also sports abillet rear wheel from Pro-One and theimposing, cavernous headlight from Head-winds ensures the Star is clearly seenCome Fly with MeRenzi's frustration wididie Star’s sluggisheven if it’s not heard. Braided stainlesssteel front brake lines snake downto die chromed caliper for betterbrake power transfer and moremetallic sheen. The brake rotor ispolished too, as are the Baron forwardcontrols, which Renzi says not onlymake his ride more stylish, but also far> more comfortable to ride.STAR DEALS OUT AHIGH PERFORMAnCE FLUSHpowerplant necessitated bold measures. The bike’s approximately 60 stockhorsepower left him cold. After hespotted a magazine article about asupercharged V-Max built by MagnaCharger, he jumped on the horn withchief developer Bill Bushling. The ensuing conversation con-vinced Renzi that superchargingwould indeed put a tiger in histank, but as luck would have it.there weren't any kits availablefor the Royal Star. However, bothprotagonists agreed a custom-made assembly was intriguing, andthe result is a claimed 116 horses... 15697
