Houston...Set sail for the U.S. premiere of "Voyages of Discovery," a new blockbuster exhibition opening October 9, 2000 at the Houston Museum of Natural Science. Direct from The Natural History Museum, London, this exhibition captures the intrigue of the maiden voyages of Darwin, Sloane and many others who changed the way we now look at the world. this colorful beetle (top left) was discovered by Captain James Cook on board the Endeavor's voyage through the South Pacific. A deep-sea fish (top right) was drawn during the Challenger voyage, an expedition engaged in studying the depths of the ocean floor. Alfred Russel Wallace discovered this blue butterfly (center) during a voyage to the Amazon. Sir Hans Sloane brought back the first cocoa bean on his voyage to Jamaica. By adding milk and sugar to the ground coca bean, Sloane invented the recipe for milk chocolate. The recipe was later bought by the Cadbury family (bottom left). Ferdinand Baucer drew these detailed sea horses (bottom right) during the Investigator's voyage to Australia. Voyages of Discovery runs through January 7, 2001. For tickets, call 713-639-4629.
