Description: This is Two Boxed Vintage 1930s French DIAMINO Wooden Crossword Tile Games. One of the two games has the original multi-panel, two-sided instructions in French, and also a flyer advertising the maker's other games of that era. NOTE: only one of the two games has the instructions and flyer. If you search for Diamino Wikipedia, you will find the article with the history of the game and the rules in French. If you use google search you will have the option to translate to English. The English translation begins: "The Diamino ( registered trademark ) is a board game and a letter game , the rules of which were created by Madeleine Janssens widow Rousseau who, from 1935 to 1948, invented, patented and published a dozen original games such as Satarallye (1940 ), a geographic journey game, Les Belligérants (1943), an abstract strategy game, Les Forbans (1945), a map game, or Péripéties (1947), a “business” game (patents available at INPI ). The Diamino holds dominoes and crosswords. It can be played by a number of players ranging from 2 to 4. Above 4 players, take 2 identical games. The game includes 63 squares. On 61 of these squares appear a letter accompanied by a number which represents the value of the square in points, cents, pennies or francs (or euros!), According to the unit in which we play. The other two squares carrying a devil can replace any letter at the option of the player. However, it is only permitted to use them as a last resort: either alone or with the last squares available to the player. They also count as 0." I did not remove and inventory the tiles, but since each box is completely full, I assume each is complete. Each copy of the game contains a matrix of 7 x 3 x 3 tiles for a total of 63 tiles. The intaglio letter and point value on each tile appear to have been burned into the wood via pyrography.I do not know the age of this specific edition of the game, but based on the appearance of the tiles, the box, and the printed materials these are thought to be early editions of the game, circa 1930s, during the era of the original invention of the game. The games will be sold as the lot of two games ONLY; neither will removed for individual sale. Condition: The tiles appear to be in good condition with some showing fairly minor wear and variation of patina from use over a period of many years. The original cardboard boxes with slip covers have quite a bit of wear on the paper covers, heavier on the edges, and a number of split seams, some mended with scotch tape or similar as seen. The instruction sheet and advertising sheets are in fairly good condition, but there is a piece torn off the upper border of one as seen that does not affect any of the printing. There is also some minor creasing and signs of handling, and since the rules, when multi-folded, have a additional vertical fold to accommodate fitting into the box. The two games are offered as found / as seen / as described. Please visit our ebay store to view a wide variety of antique, vintage and contemporary items.
