This resistor is rated eight watts when attached to its aluminum heat sink. Rated one watt in free air. Vishay Precision Group is allowed to assign an eight-watt rating to this component because the resistive element in the TO-220 case is attached to its aluminum tab for rapid thermal transfer to the heat sink (the mounting hole in the tab makes fastening the resistor to the heat sink a priori).Although these precision resistors have never been used (and therefore new); we acquired a significant quantity of them without individual Alpha packaging.
