Description: Framed picture 2-4-0 Well-tank Locomotive, Joseph Beattie, London and South Western Railway, 1863 by H M Whitcombe Wheelbase 12ft 6in Driving wheels 5ft 6in Carrying wheels 3ft 7½in Cylinders 15½in x 20in Boiler Pressure 130 lbs per sq in Weight 34 tons 9cwt This little engine was designed primarily for suburban traffic, but it still has many of the features of Beattie's express engines. The weight seems high for such a small engine, but it included the weight of the welltanks, under the boiler behind the smokebox and at the rear under the bunker, as well as their water content. On express engines all that weight would have been carried in the tender, and also the weight of the bunker and fuel. Beattie's usual donkey engine can be seen on the running platform between the two driving wheels. Despite their small size these engines worked very satisfactorily for many years. They are said to have hauled trains of up to 22 coaches - small light coaches by today's standards - with good powers of acceleration. Even in those days the Surrey suburbs housed an impressive population. No less than 84 engines of this class were built, but of these only three were built in the South Western works at Nine Elms, the remainder being built by Beyer Peacock. Charles Beyer had been head of the design department at Sharp's until 1854, when he left to start his own firm which rapidly attained a high reputation, producing high class locomotives, both in performance and appearance. Later on (1890's) many of these little Beattie engines were rebuilt with larger boilers and cylinders. By then there were still sixty of them in service mainly on branch lines; William Adams' larger engines had mostly taken over the suburban traffic. Three of the little Beattie well-tanks were working on the Bodmin and Wadebridge line until 1962, ninety-nine years after the birth of the class. One, much rebuilt, is preserved in the National Collection and there is another preserved at the Quainton Railway Society. Super picture in an A4 (30 x 21 cm. or 11.7 x 8.3 inch) size frame.
