Description: *** Comprehensive History of the Church *** ** B.H. Roberts ** 1st edition, produced for the church's centennial year, Deseret News Press, Salt Lake City, Utah, 1930. Oversized dark blue hardcovers, with sunburst design shining over Earth, embossed deco around front covers and along spine, tissue-guarded engravings/photos throughout each volume, fold-out maps in some. Beautiful set! Condition: Some general shelfwear at spine caps and some corners, some rubbing to front side of bottom page edges (see pics). No names or markings on endpapers, but there is some scattered red pencil and pencil markings in 4 of 6 volumes, and some light moisture waviness to Vol 6. Overall good set. Note a couple of the pics are showing with full flash - to highlight detail. They are a dark blue in normal light. Details on each volume: Volume One: Begins with tissue-guarded portrait of Joseph Smith. Does have 12 or so pages in first couple chapters with light red pencil underlining and/or marginal notes. Looks like it's been erased, but can still see it. Includes fold-out map of the Upper Missouri at end of book. Volume Two: Joseph Smith death mask with tissue-guard as frontispiece. Counted 6-7 instances with pencil brackets in margin, and one instance with red pencil markings. Includes fold-out maps of Northern Illinois and Nauvoo town. Volume Three: Brigham Young as frontis (tissue-guard has some tears and creasing). Noted 7 pages with pencil - was usually just a checkmark or a couple of brackets in margins. Large fold-out map of the pioneer trek at rear, fold-out of Great Salt Lake town plot inside. Volume Four: Frontis. portrait of President John Taylor. 15 pages with red pencil underlining and marginal notes, most of which is in a single chapter on the Handcart Pioneers. Otherwise, just one marginal note "Lee's trial." Roughly 2.5" inch whitish spot on rear cover, minor. Volume Five: Frontis engraving of Wilford Woodruff. Small spot along top edge of rear pastedown. Volume is clean; no markings. Volume Six: Frontis engraving of Pres. Heber J. Grant. A few small spots along page fore-edge. There is some waviness and stiffness to pages along bottom 1/2" - 3/4" or so, and for some a very faint dampstain line about 1/4" from bottom. Pages not stuck together or anything, all turn fine, and visually a minor issue.
