Description: 19thc English Folk Art Painting a Fighting Cockeral. In a period hand sponged pine frame. This highly stylized, primitive animal portrait was probably painted by an itinerant provincial painter. He has left us with largely illegible initials (“U N T?”). Typically these artists were hired to celebrate a prized farm animal or, as in this case, a victorious fighting cock ( note the spurs attached to the legs). The artist would usually deliver his painting in a hand crafted/decorated frame intended to compliment the work. English folk art 18th-19thc animal portraits have rocketed in value and are highly sought after by country primitive collectors. The painting was relined many years ago but the surface shows no signs of restoration. Overall dimensions 22”x 18.5”. Oil on canvas.
