Description: Huge fire, police, watchman wood noise maker clacker 13 1/4 inches long. There is a large stamped maker's mark on the wood at one flat end section next to where the two clacker slats are still attached to the casing. But, the marking is faint & we are not able to read any of it. Probably American. But, we are not certain. Circa late 19th century or so. This is a massive two clacker slat example. It measures 13 1/4 inches long by 10 inches from the top edge to the bottom of the handle & 2 3/8 inches thick. The piece weighs in at one full pound. This noise maker has a powerful visual appeal because of this size & fine quality. There are no chips to the wood, & there are no cracks, & no repairs. All of the wood has a lovely pleasing mellow patina gained from many years of age & only light use. This example has a very appealing construction feature. The two clacker slats are carved from the center of the same piece of wood as the clacker slat casing. Interestingly, the clacker slats are still connected at one end to the clacker slat casing. This different construction feature serves to make the piece more sturdy than those using the standard separate non-connected clacker slat construction method. A marvelous design feature which certainly adds to it's appeal. This fine item was recently found in an estate sale in Chester County, Pennsylvania.
