Description: "Ferrari 500 Testa Rossa" Source: Ferrari, published in 1995 Description Title: "The name Testa Rossa is synonymous with some of the most memorable successes in the history of the Ferrari marque. It was called >>red head<< because the cam covers which adorned the cylinder heads were painted red. What is more, these cars caused the opposition to go red with embarrassment when they met in competition. Its role of honour includes 13 particularly important wins, as well as the World Championship in 1958, 1960 and 1961. This run was only interrupted in 1959 by Aston Martin, with the aid of some God-given luck and a driving genius by the name of Stirling Moss. At that time the Testa Rossa project was already three years old, as it had begun in 1956 with the two litre 500 TR version produced by engine builder Alberto Massimino. At the end of 1956 appeared the TRC, which Ferrari used to tackle the demands of Appendix C of the sporting regulations, even if this had certain elements that did not seem reasonable: a passenger door, a full-width windscreen, a folding roof and a spare wheel. As was the case with the TR, the bodywork was designed by Pinin Farina and built by Scaglietti. The entire production run was bought by very satisfied customers. The 250 Testa Rossa appeared in 1957 and the project chief was Carlo Chiti, who anticipated things to come as, from 1958, the regulations limited the engine capacity for sports cars to three litres. Ferrari therefore perfected its armoury by taking the chassis from the 290 MM, the power unit from the 250 GT, and the bodywork of the TR. Two prototypes ran in the Nurburgring 1000 kilo- metres and the 24 Hours of Le Mans, affording a glimpse of the Testa Rossa's potential. Then, at a press conference held on 22nd November 1957, Enzo Ferrari launched the production version with its characteristic spectacular cutaway fenders, designed to cool the huge drum brakes, a four speed synchromesh box and the magical power output of 100 horsepower per litre. It was destined for the Californian Ferrari concessionaire, John von Neumann. Once again from the pen of Pinin Farina and built by Medaro Fantuzzi, the TR 59 was more compact. It had a five speed box and disc brakes with an engine that pumped out 306 horsepower. In 1960, as stipulated by the regulations, the windscreen was 25 cms high, the boot lid was longer, and some versions, identified with the model number TRI, had independent suspension."
