The half dollar was struck in a composition of 90% silver, which was not typical for commemorative half dollars. In 1982, the George Washington Half Dollar had been struck in silver, but all subsequent half dollars had been struck in a clad composition. The American Numismatic Association marked the edge of 9,656 of the 1993 Bill of Rights Half Dollars with the initials of the Madison Foundation and a serial number as a special promotion. The 1993 Bill of Rights Commemorative Half Dollars were available in proof version struck at the San Francisco Mint and uncirculated version struck at the West point Mint. The coins were sold individually, as well as incorporated within proof or uncirculated two-coin and three-coin sets and a comprehensive six-coin set. Three special limited edition packaging options were also offered. A Young Collectors Set contained the half dollar in packaging targeted towards younger collectors. A Coin and Medal Set contained the half dollar along with the James Madison Medal. Finally, the Bill of Rights Commemorative Coin and Stamp Set contained the half dollar and a commemorative stamp, representing the first time that a commemorative coin and stamp were offered together as a set. Each of these products was limited to 50,000 units. The US Mint also offered the Half Dollar and the $5 Gold coin on a key chain and on another series a money clip. The Half Dollar Bill of Rights key chain had a final sale of 60. These token items were very short-lived. 1993-W United States 'Bill of Rights' Silver ½ Half Dollar Commemorative issue The Bill of Rights Obverse James Madison writing the Bill of Rights. Engraved by Moritz Furst this medal is part of a series known as 'Presidential Medals'. Peace medals played a significant role in relations between the United States government and the Native American population. Following the British and French practice of handing out silver medals to tribal chiefs, George Washington began a policy of presenting peace medals to American Indian leaders at treaty signings and other formal ceremonies. Every subsequent American president from Thomas Jefferson to Benjamin Harrison is represented on an Indian peace medal, with the exception of William Henry Harrison. The medals were often produced in different sizes according to the rank of the recipients.Medals usually bore the Infamous hand shake between Colonial American and Native American, symbolized by two hands clasped in token of amity. On the cuff of the left wrist are three stripes and buttons, while the other wrist is bare. Above the hands, the pipe of peace and the tomahawk are crossed over each other.
