The entire cost of shipping plus additional costs automatically goes to eBay. I do not make anything, I actually lose the funds on top of the additional costs. I can provide a breakdown by eBay to show that I’ve lost money BEFORE I even shipped the item. EXAMPLE: $100 item with $8 shipping paid by buyer results in $92 BEFORE I even pay for shipping. Instead of the buyer paying, I end up paying the shipping as well as the buyer. PLEASE NOTE: I am NOT responsible for the amount eBay charges for “discounted” shipping. The amount is established by eBay. I have NO control over shipping costs set by eBay. I am NOT responsible for the “Sales Tax” eBay “collects” from the buyer. Those costs are established by eBay for locations that charge “Sales Tax.” A SPECIAL NOTE: eBay charges ALL sellers a set fee of 13.25% for “Final Value Fees.” Here is the EXACT breakdown of how the “Final Value Fees” are calculated. (This is a hypothetical sale of TWO items): ITEM #1: Item #1 sells for $33.85 Sales Tax is charged to the buyer at $2.61 from State “X” eBay recommends Shipping and Handling costs at $4.88 The TOTAL “Final Value” for Item #1, calculated by eBay, is $41.34. ITEM #2: Item #2 sells for $3.25 Shipping and Handling: $0.47 (NOTE: Shipping was combined under Item #1. HOWEVER, eBay calculates a HIDDEN cost for shipping and handling unknown to the Buyer or Seller. No Sales Tax is added. (Probably because it's low cost.) The TOTAL “Final Value” for Item #2, calculated by eBay, is $3.72. NOTE: The seller ONLY receives $33.85 plus $3.25 for both items BEFORE the Final Value Fees are calculated. The above scenario DOES NOT include the ADDITIONAL fees charged by eBay for auction listings less than 5 days, minimum, the cost of adding ANY fees to promote the listings, and if a reserve price option is used. Those are calculated as part of the “Final Value of the sale.” This increases what eBay considers as the Total Sale when calculating what they charge Sellers. CHARGES CHARGED BY eBAY: This is how eBay calculates the charges to the seller: According to eBay, ALL Final Value Fees are calculated for items sold between $0.00 to $7,500.00 at a set rate of 13.25%. This is how those fees are broken down: The TOTAL cost charged to the BUYER (Meaning the buyer pays this amount minus the ADDITIONAL fees charged to the Seller to list the item under certain conditions) are charged 13.25% since it is under $7500.00. Anything greater is a different percentage. BREAKDOWN OF eBAY FEES ITEM #1: The BUYER pays $41.34 to buy item #1 sold on eBay. The SELLER is required to pay 13.25% of what the BUYER pays to eBay. Here is the breakdown: $41.34 x 13.25% = $5.48 ITEM #2: The BUYER pays $3.72 to buy item #2 sold on eBay. The SELLER is required to pay 13.25% of what the BUYER pays to eBay. Here is the breakdown: $3.72 x 13.25% = $0.49 POSSIBLE ADDITIONAL CHARGES SUBJECTED BY eBay: According to eBay, “We calculated your fees based on the total amount of the sale. This includes the item price, shipping and handling costs, and applicable taxes and fees.” eBay adds an ADDITIONAL cost called the “FINAL VALUE FEE.” According to eBay, this is a “pre-order fixed amount for “order total over $10.01+”. eBay charges an ADDITIONAL fee of $0.40 on TOP of the 13.25% for each item sold. The TOTAL fee charged to the SELLER is $6.37. The breakdown is as follows: Item #1 Fee: $5.48 Item #2 Fee: 0.49 A Final Value Fee: 0.40 Total Fee: $6.37 This is what the BUYER pays: Item Subtotal (2 items) $33.85 + 3.25 = $37.10 Shipping Costs charged by eBay: $4.88 + 0.47 = $ 5.35 Sales Tax (100% to the State): $2.61 + 0.00 = $. 2.61 ORDER TOTAL PAID BY THE BUYER: $37.10 + 5.35 + 2.61 = $45.06 This is what the SELLER receives: Received from the BUYER: $45.06 Minus Sales Tax taken by eBay: 2.61 Minus Selling Costs taken by eBay: 6.37* ORDER EARNINGS FOR THE SELLER: $36.08 $45.06 - 2.61 - 6.37* =$36.08 SUBTOTAL: The ACTUAL Funds for the Sale of the items were $37.10. This DOESN’T include the 13.25% charges AND the Shipping costs to send the package: FURTHER BREAKDOWN eBay Calculated earnings MINUS Shipping costs (yet to be paid by the seller to ship the item) EQUALS what the seller receives: $36.08 -$5.35 = $30.73 FINAL PAYOUT: Prepayment of what eBay is to transfer to SELLERS account MINUS eBay charges for expedited deposit to a SELLER Bank Account (1.5% charge by eBay) EQUALS what the SELLER ACTUALLY receives at the end of the auction. $30.73 - 0.46 = $30.27 SUMMARY: The SELLER receives $30.27 from what the item sells for $36.08. The seller LOSES $5.81 from the sale. eBay charges 13.25% for sales taxes that are taken from the seller to pay 100% to the State. Instead of charging ONLY 13.25% of the actual selling cost, eBay is making 13.25 of the 100% sales tax from the Seller. The seller is NOT responsible for calculating the State sales tax OR the “reduced” charges for shipping. In reality, BOTH the BUYER and SELLER are paying double shipping while eBay is making money from the seller at 13.25% for charging shipping costs established by eBay. The ONLY winner is eBay skimming from the top from sales taxes collected and shipping charges. None of which benefits the seller. To further make matters complicated, all transactions totaling OVER $600 is reported to the IRS and subjected to end-of-the-year tax liability by the Seller. The seller ends up having to account for ALL the charges and fees eBay charged including out-of-pocket expenses to itemize when filing taxes so the seller doesnt overpay. Therefore, DO NOT BLAME the seller for the State Sales Taxes and Shipping costs. These do NOT benefit the seller. Be kind when you leave feedback. If anyone wishes to see the breakdown of what is charged by eBay for any purchases, just ask and I will gladly take a snapshot of the screens showing what eBay has cleverly hidden but can be seen if the seller is willing to spend time and click on the link which is provided within the receipt but cleverly hidden. Thank you. Happy Bidding
