His catalogue of hits includes“Seventh Son,” “You Shook Me,” “I Ain’tSuperstitious ” “Back Door Man,” “Lit-tle Red Rooster,” “Spoonful,” anddozens more that have been covered bysuch performers as Elvis Presley, ChuckBerry, the Rolling Stones, Peter, Paul &Mary, and others, selling millions ofcopies.Despite the acclaim his songwritinghas brought him, few people todayknow about Willie’s talents as an acous-tic bassist—and as the creator of a uni-que slap style that has never beenduplicated.Willie was born in the heart of theDelta, in Vicksburg, Mississippi, on July1,1915, and moved north to Chicago atthe age of 17. As a young man he sang ingospel groups and was also involved inboxing, becoming a Golden Glovesheavyweight champion in 1937. Hisboxing career was cut short, however, when Willie was suspended from thering (he and his manager had a slightaltercation in the boxing commis-sioner’s office, and “rearranged” someof the office furniture).Pugilism’s loss was music’s gain, asWillie dedicated himself full-time tothe blues. He was a fixture on the Chi-cago music scene for more than fortyyears—as a bassist, singer, songwriter, and record producer. During thisperiod he played with greats such asMuddy Waters and Howlin’ Wolf, andeven played bass on the first ChuckBerry recordings for Chess Records.Along the way he also pioneered hisslap bass techniques. He recorded fre-quently without a drummer, so hedeveloped a way to imitate quick snare -drum rolls with a combination ofstring-pulling and slapping movements. In 1984 Willie moved to southernCalifornia and went into semi-retire-ment. Recently, he has put his energiesbehind the Blues Heaven Foundation(c/o the Cameron Organization, 2700Cahuenga East (4103), Los Angeles, CA90068), an organization he helpedfound in order to promote and assistblues artists, and to preserve America’sblues heritage.WTHEN YOU WERE A youngplayer, wha t m usicia ns in fl u en cedyo uthe most?My main influence just died last fall:Little Brother Montgomery [Ed.
