Description: 1986 bronze plaque dedicating the sculpture "Three Sisters" by George La Rue, donated by Warren Wilson and Joanne Casey. 8 inches by 10 inches, 3/8 inch thick, weighs 7 lbs. According to the Smithsonian American Art Museum Art Inventory, the plaque was attached to an outdoor bronze sculpture by George LaRue located in Oakland California’s Snow Park, corner of 20th and Harrison Streets. George LaRue (1925 – 2012) was born George W. Hawkins. He became a Master Sculptor, and got his teaching credential from The California College of Arts and Crafts. According to his obituary, “a friend, Warren Wilson, introduced him to bronze casting and asked George to design a sculpture for the city of Oakland which Warren would purchase and then donate to the Oakland Art Museum. In 1986 the sculpture Three Sisters was put on permanent exhibit by the Oakland Art Museum in Snow Park in Oakland, near Kaiser Permanente. George specified that the sculpture be placed outside, because the Museum did not allow people to touch their art.” It is unclear why the plaque offered here was removed. It was purchased at an estate auction in Northern California.
