For filmmaker David Lean, the passage to India began nearly 30 years ago. He had just finished "The Sound Barrier," a sort of pre-Technicolor version of "The Right Stuff," "Brief Encounter," "Great Expectations" and "Oliver Twist" were all behind him. "The Bridge on the River Kwai," Lawrence of Arabia" and "Dr. Zhivago" were still years away. Alexander Korda, the Hungarian-born producer and savior of the British movie industry, had summoned the director into his office at London Films. A third of a century later, Lean remembers their conversation with benevolent glee. With Nigel Havers at the reins, Judy Davis (left) and Peggy Ashcroft (right) ride through the streets of 1928 India in Columbia Pictures' "A Passage To India," an emotional and deeply personal story of love and class struggle, written and directed by David Lean and based on E.M. Forster's classic novel. James Fox, Alec Guiness and Victor Banerjee also star in the film, produced by John Brabourne and Richard Goodwin.Photo measures 9.75 x 8inches. Photo is dated --1984.
