Eddie Murray was an 8× All-Star (1978, 1981–1986, 1991), World Series champion (1983), AL Rookie of the Year (1977), 3× Gold Glove Award (1982–1984), 3× Silver Slugger Award (1983, 1984, 1990), AL home run leader (1981), AL RBI leader (1981) and the Baltimore Orioles retired his No. 33. Murray was a first baseman and designated hitter who played for the Baltimore Orioles (1977–1988), Los Angeles Dodgers (1989–1991), New York Mets (1992–1993), Cleveland Indians (1994–1996), Baltimore Orioles (1996), Anaheim Angels (1997) and Los Angeles Dodgers (1997). Though Murray never won a Most Valuable Player (MVP) Award, he finished in the top ten in MVP voting six times. Murray hit 19 grand slams (fourth all-time) and is one of only six players to have both 3,000 career hits and 500 home runs in their career. Murray's career batting average in 238 at-bats with the bases loaded is .399 with 298 RBI with a .739 slugging percentage. Murray hit home runs from both sides of the plate in the same game 11 times and was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2003 on the 1st ballot. In the New Bill James Historical Baseball Abstract (2001), Murray is described as the fifth-best first baseman in major league history. He was 77th on the list of the Baseball's 100 Greatest Players by The Sporting News (1998). During his Hall of Fame career, Murray batted .287 with 3,255 hits, 504 home runs and 1,917 RBIs.
