From Wikipedia: Lewis Thomas (November 25, 1913 – December 3, 1993) was an American physician, poet, etymologist, essayist, administrator, educator, policy advisor, and researcher. Thomas was born in Flushing, New York and attended Princeton University and Harvard Medical School. He became Dean of Yale Medical School and New York University School of Medicine, and President of Memorial Sloan-Kettering Institute. His formative years as an independent medical researcher were at Tulane University School of Medicine. He was invited to write regular essays in the New England Journal of Medicine. One collection of those essays, The Lives of a Cell: Notes of a Biology Watcher (1974), won annual National Book Awards in two categories, Arts and Letters and The Sciences (both awards were split). (He also won a Christopher Award for that book.) Two other collections of essays (originally published in NEJM and elsewhere) were The Medusa and the Snail and Late Night Thoughts on Listening to Mahler's Ninth Symphony. In its first paperback edition, The Medusa and the Snail won another National Book Award in Science. Many of his essays discuss relationships among ideas or concepts using etymology as a starting point. Others concern the cultural implications of scientific discoveries and the growing awareness of ecology. Thomas is often quoted, given his notably eclectic interests and superlative prose style. The Lewis Thomas Prize is awarded annually by The Rockefeller University to a scientist for artistic achievement. DESCRIPTION: 175 pages 8 3/8 x 5 7/8 inches first edition hardcover with dustjacket CONDITION: This hard-cover book is in very good condition with like dust jacket. The hardcover is clean and shows only slight wear at the corners. The cloth at the head of the spine has been worn through somehow—(see pic) The interior is excellent with no names, marks, underlining, tears or odor. The hinges and binding are excellent with no loose or missing pages. The dust jacket has been price-clipped, but is otherwise complete. It is slightly rubbed at the corners. From the dust jacket description: The medusa is a tiny jellyfish that lives on the ventral surface of a sea slug found in the Bay of Naples. These two organisms depend on each other for their survival. What a mix-up of selfness! “The thought of these creatures gives me an odd feeling. They do not remind me of anything, really. They are bizarre, that’s it, unique. And at the same time, like a vaguely remembered dream, they remind me of the whole earth at one.” Readers and admirers of Lewis Thomas will not be surprised to find themselves bound up in the fate of the medusa and the snail; it is one of Dr. Thomas’s genial qualities that he brings the most unlikely yet completely apposite observations to bear upon the eternal issues of life and death. These further “Notes of a Biology Watcher” extend the explorations of man and his world that readers of The Lives of a Cell will remember with gratitude.
