1979 Giovanni Schoeman Cast Bronze Wild Horses Paperweight Signed Vintage

Description: Giovanni Schoeman Biography Added 01 March 2015 at 14:59 Giovanni Schoeman (1940-1981) was born in South Africa and studied at the Johannesburg School of art, RSA, the Rawnsley Academy, London, the Academy of Arts & Crafts, Holland and the Brera Academy, Italy. Schoeman was a sculptor of extraordinary creative ability. In the late 1960`s he contributed to the recently created technique of producing `Cold Cast Resin Metal`.   `Cold-Cast Bronze` is a composition of 85 to 87% bronze powder with a resin binder. The metal powder is mixed into the resin to form a creamy mixture which is poured in to a mold. The resulting cast is one with an appearance of solid metal. Different metal powders such as bronze, brass, nickel and copper can be used depending on the effect desired. The remaining cavity is then filled with plain resin to give stability. In the late 1960`s Schoeman used this technique in his studio in London`s West Hampstead. He soon expanded to a factory with apprentices in neighbouring Kentish Town. His pieces were sold in London`s famous outdoor art markets at Hyde Park & Green Park. By the late 1970’s Schoeman moved to Santa Barbara, California. Initialy he set up business with Carl Edward Zehner. Their company intended to produce large scale art however this never got off the ground which would later lead to Schoeman`s demise. Mysteriously in 1981 Schoeman was murdered by a hitman in a triple homicide which included his girlfriend and a business partner from another venture. Schoeman has a substantial and very loyal following of collectors. Major commissions in the industry include sculptures for Rolls Royce, The British Museum and a piece for the movie Rocky II. Schoeman`s work appears in private collections including those of Sylvester Stallone, Burgess Meredith, Elizabeth Montgomery, Carl Weathers, Billy Preston, Dizzy Gillespie, Sheik Abdula Al’Burikian and E Nasr. Another Schoeman sculpture of the period appeared in the first series of the TV programme Mad Men as photographed. These sculptures are fascinating on several levels. Each item is deconstructed into core parts with severe geometric representation typical of the Brutalist fashion of the period. Schoeman embellished each piece with icons & patterns. The Sunflower includes suns & stars while the Peacock also has classical images of fairies, angels, gods and a couple embrasing. Roomscape struck gold with these three original vintage Schoeman sculptures from the 1970`s and is pleased to present them for sale from the original owner.
