In her biography, "Lucky Eyes and a High Heart," (Bobbs-Merrill), Nancy Cardozo tells how Maud Gonne, daughter of a British army officer stationed in Ireland, spent some of her happiest childhood days there. "No place has ever seemed to me quite so lovely as Howth," Maud wrote some 70 years later. When Belle of Victorian Dublin, Maud was nearly six feet tall. Heavy red-gold hair and large dark eyes set off her luminous complexion. She had seen much of Europe and her Parisian elegance captivated even the Prince of Wales. She was clearly headed for a brilliant match. Instead she became an Irish patriot and a reformer.
