Description: Handsome fold-out map of Arizona, New Mexico, Utah, and Colorado. This map opens to a generous 35" x 23" and is drawn on a scale of 1:2,124,000, or 33.5 miles to one inch. Details include highways, passenger railroads, canals, recreational trails, airports, ski areas, scenic rivers, cities, ghost towns, parks, and topography. The map labels U.S. Route 666, nicknamed the "Devil's Highway" because of the reference in the Bible (Revelation 13:18): Let him who has understanding calculate the number of the beast, for it is the number of a man: His number is 666. Although the road's designation was simply the result of its being the sixth branch of U.S. 66, it generated sufficient controversy that a few years ago the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials gave it a new number: U.S. 491. Consequently, U.S. 666 no longer appears on today's maps. On the reverse side of the map there are colorful illustrations of the scenic attractions of Arizona, New Mexico, Utah, and Colorado, along with descriptive text. The map was produced by the Cartographic Division of the National Geographic Society and was issued as a supplement to the October 1977 issue of National Geographic Magazine as part of its "Close-Up: USA" series.
