He has done hisstints with bebop oriented groups, moved onto Latin music, had his stay with Miles Davis, and is currently doing what he wants to do,writing and being a saxophonist who express-es himself. His musical forebears were his fellowPhiladelphians. Check Leonard Feather forthe complete scroll of Brotherly Lovers.Fortune: Between the fact that so many ofus have come out of Philly and GranoffsSchool of Music and studying with RolandWiggins, music director at Amherst, I be-came exposed to a lot of music, all kinds.Graduates of Granoff include John Coltraneand Lee Morgan. It was just a music schoolthat many of us passed through. It had bothprivate courses and regular formal classes, soyou had both ends of it. I attended for the ba-sics, to learn the instrument and theory.Smith: From the way you talk I take it youwere a reedman from the start.Fortune: Yeah. I didn’t get into it until 1was 18 when a schoolmate trumpet playercaught my ear. I was just hanging on the cor-ner, nothing much happening, when I heardnames like Miles Davis and Charlie Parker.Mind you, this was 1957, two years after Birdhad died. I was just waking up. I asked whohe was, and I decided to play the horn. I real-ly don’t know why. Nobody in my familyplayed an instrument, but I felt a drive to doit. You see I had this idea that in about threemonths I was going to terrorize the world. Ifound that after three months I was still hav-ing trouble with a C scale. So 1 put it in thecloset for awhile. It wasn’t until a year laterthat I again tried to do something with the in-strument. I remember just listening to recordsover and over and was completely dumb-founded as to what those cats were doing. My first set of chords were Night In Tunisiaand I played the hell out of those chords. Then I listened to the recording and foundthat those cats were playing everything ex-cept what I was studying. Now thechronology escapes me, but those are some ofthe horrible things I remember. I say “hor-rible” because of the frustration. It seems allI can remember was forlorn hopes, dreams Ithought I could never attain.Smith: When did you seriously begin to“hear” Bird? I pick him because at 17, in1957, and in Philadelphia, you obviouslyweren’t catching up on your Johnny Hodges.Nor is your style reminiscent of Benny Car-ter.Fortune: Right on all counts. Somewherearound eight to ten months after I bought analto I bought Bird And Strings. I could takethat; everything else was kind of hard on me.One of the things that fascinates me withthis music called jazz, whatever that is, is thatit’s another kind of music. I listened when Iwas a teenager, and I listen to it now and Iask myself, “Wow, you mean to tell me I wasinto that?” I listened to Bird And Strings thenand I will listen to it now, and I’ll hear some-thing that I didn’t hear a year ago. As yougrow and develop in the music, you come tohear more than you did at such-and-such age... 14922-AL-760812-75
