Description: Shipping Australia Wide is Free Modern Aboriginal PaintingsText by Rex Battarbee and Bernice BattarbeePublished by Rigby Limited, 1976Brand NewWith an introduction by Bernice Battarbee and a summary by Rex Battarbee. There are 36 full colour plates (there is some reflection in the photographs due the high gloss nature of the paper).Rex Battarbee is often referred to as the man who "discovered" and first trained Albert Namatjira to paint in watercolours. It was almost certainly Battarbee's paintings of their homeland that first induced Namatjira and his followers to take up water-colour painting.Rex Battarbee was born in 1893 at Warrnambool in Victoria, where his parents were dairy farmers at that time. His sister Florida, already trained as a painter under Walter Withers, guided the cultural life of the district and first introduced Rex to the secrets of the palette. His interest in the Australian aboriginal was first awakened by acquaintance with an old man, the last of the local tribe, who lived in a mia-mia near the Battarbee farm.Australian Aborigines have been artists from time immemorial. Their art is an integral part of their ceremonial life, and its forms and techniques have changed little over the centuries. The plates consist of those listed below with captions, for example, "Painted after two weeks tuition. It was the first work sold by Albert Namatjira to Rex Battarbee, and the means by which the new artist bought further paper and paints to continue his career".Albert Namatjira The Amphitheatre, Palm Valley, 1936 Late Afternoon in the Macdonnell Ranges, 1959 Mount Hermannsburg, 1944 Wild Life Near the Gosse's Range After Rain, 1939 Enos Namatjira The Blue Macdonnell Ranges, 1965 Ghost Gums at Mangaraka Gorge, 1950 Gabriel Namatjira The Tranquillity of a Summer's Afternoon in Central Australia, 1964 Kangaroos at Mount Sonder, 1969 Oscar Namatjira Mount Chappel, 1950 Ghost Gums of the Finke Valley, 1967 Ewald Namatjira Contrasting Colours Seen After Rain, 1959 Macdonnell Range Colour Harmony Rain Falling in the James Range, 1948 Flame-Like Mountains: James Range, 1949 Decorative Colour Design in the Macdonnells, 1967 Simplicity in Colour Contrasts, 1970 Keith Namatjira Ghost Gum at Papunya, 1969 Haast's Bluff, 1963 Maurice Namatjira Sunset Along the Chewings Range, 1969 Arid Beauty in the Centralian Mountains, 1971 Edwin Pareroulta Vitality of the Winter Scene in the Macdonnells, 1971 Tribal Parallelism in the Macdonnell Ranges, 1970 Otto Pareroulta Totemic Rhythm, 1963 Tribal Interpretation of the James Range, 1969 Reuben Pareroulta Colour Harmony, 1968 Henoch Raberaba Sunset in the James Range, 1952 Rocky Outcrops of the Macdonnells, 1969 Herbert Raberaba Mount Hermannsburg and the Finke Valley, 1969 Storm Clouds, James Range, 1969 Benjamin Landara Tree Pattern at Glen Helen, 1970 Mount Sonder, 1971 Walter Ebatarinja Corroboree Men With the Tjurungas, 1945 Cordula Ebatarinja Giles Range at Hermannsburg, 1969 Joshua Ebatarinja Western Macdonnell Ranges at Glen Helen, 1971 Summer Afternoon in the Macdonnells, 1971In pictorial hardcover, in 32 pages.
