Believing that the Center should have an influence beyond that of the exhibit hall, the Board of Trustees began the Western Heritage Awards program in 1960 to encourage others to tell the great stories of the West. The developing West is one of history's most exciting eras — a period when people from all nationalities, all walks of life sought a new life on the frontier. Although the U.S. Census proclaimed 1890 as the end of the frontier, it has no boundaries in the hearts of people the world over. The Wrangler winners listed here were recognized for their outstanding contributions to the understanding of that epoch.
